My ACC Expires in 2027: Can I Complete My Mentor Coaching in 2026?

If your ICF ACC credential expires in 2027, you may be wondering whether you should wait until next year to complete your required mentor coaching, especially with changes to ICF's mentor coaching requirements coming January 1, 2027.
The good news is:
Yes. If your ACC expires in 2027, you can complete your required 10 hours of mentor coaching in 2026.
And ICF has specifically confirmed that qualifying mentor coaching completed in 2026 or earlier can still be used toward an ACC renewal in 2027 or later.
You do not need to repeat those hours simply because your renewal happens after January 1.
There are, however, a few important timing rules to understand… particularly if your mentor coaching starts in 2026 but continues into 2027.
Let's break it down.
Can I complete my ACC renewal mentor coaching before my credential expires?
Absolutely.
Your mentor coaching does not need to happen immediately before your ACC renewal date.
For ACC renewal, ICF requires you to complete 10 hours of mentor coaching over a period of at least three months, including at least three hours of individual mentor coaching.
That means it often makes sense to complete your mentor coaching well before your actual renewal deadline.
In fact, waiting until your credential is only a few weeks away from expiring can create a problem because the 10 mentor coaching hours cannot simply be compressed into a weekend or a few sessions at the last minute.
ICF clarifies that 12 full weeks must pass between your first and final mentor coaching sessions.
So if your ACC expires in early 2027, fall 2026 may actually be an ideal time to get started.
What happens if I complete all 10 mentor coaching hours in 2026?
If you complete your mentor coaching before January 1, 2027, the current mentor eligibility rules apply.
Under the current requirements, an ACC renewal candidate can receive mentor coaching from:
a current PCC credential-holder,
a current MCC credential-holder, or
an ACC credential-holder who has renewed their ACC at least once.
If those mentor coaching hours meet ICF's current requirements, ICF says they can still be used toward your ACC renewal in 2027 or later.
In other words:
Your renewal date does not retroactively change the rules that applied when you completed your mentor coaching.
If you completed qualifying mentor coaching in 2026, those hours don't suddenly become invalid on January 1, 2027.
What changes on January 1, 2027?
Beginning January 1, 2027, ICF is changing who is eligible to provide new mentor coaching.
Any new mentor coaching received on or after January 1, 2027 must be provided by a mentor coach who holds the appropriate ICF Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS).
For an ACC coach, that means you can receive:
ACC-level mentor coaching from an MCS-ACC, or
PCC-level mentor coaching from an MCS-PCC.
So if you're beginning your entire mentor coaching engagement in 2027, you'll want to confirm that your mentor coach holds the appropriate MCS before getting started.

What if I start my mentor coaching in 2026 but finish in 2027?
This is where you'll want to pay particular attention.
ICF's new requirement applies to new mentor coaching received beginning January 1, 2027.
So imagine you start your 10-hour mentor coaching engagement in October 2026.
You complete several sessions in October, November and December — but your final few sessions take place in January or February 2027.
The mentor coaching you received in 2026 falls under the existing eligibility requirements.
However, mentor coaching you receive beginning January 1, 2027 needs to be delivered by a mentor coach who meets the new MCS requirement.
Practically, that means that if your mentor coaching is likely to cross into 2027, one of the simplest options is to choose an MCS-qualified mentor coach from the beginning.
Then you don't need to worry about your mentor's eligibility changing partway through your engagement.
Do I have to rush and finish before December 31, 2026?
No.
There isn't a blanket requirement that ACC coaches renewing in 2027 must finish their mentor coaching before the end of 2026.
That's an important distinction.
You have two perfectly legitimate options.
You can complete qualifying mentor coaching under the current rules before January 1, 2027.
Or
You can complete some or all of your mentor coaching in 2027 with an appropriately qualified MCS mentor coach.
The right choice is less about trying to “beat” a deadline and more about making sure your mentor coaching meets the rules that apply when you receive it.
If you're already working with a mentor coach who does not plan to obtain the MCS, though, then completing your qualifying hours before January 1 may be worth discussing.
If you're choosing a new mentor coach now and your engagement is likely to continue into 2027, choosing someone who already holds the appropriate MCS can make the transition much simpler.
How early can I complete mentor coaching for ACC renewal?
This is another question I hear from coaches who are trying to get organized well ahead of their renewal date.
You do not need to wait until the final weeks before your credential expires.
In fact, mentor coaching is designed to be a developmental process rather than an administrative task completed immediately before renewal.
Your 10 hours must occur across at least three months, and the purpose is to work on your actual coaching skills in relation to the ICF Core Competencies.
That means there can be real value in completing mentor coaching earlier and actually having time to apply what you're learning in your coaching practice.
If your ACC expires in the first half of 2027, beginning your mentor coaching in fall 2026 gives you room to:
complete the required 12-week span without rushing,
work with real coaching examples,
practice between sessions,
revisit competencies you're developing,
deal with holidays, illness or scheduling changes without putting your renewal at risk, and
finish your mentor coaching before you're staring down your credential expiration date.
For most coaches, that feels very different from trying to squeeze the requirement in at the last minute.
Do I need recordings for my ACC renewal mentor coaching?
There is an important difference between using recordings during mentor coaching and submitting recordings to ICF for renewal.
You are not required to submit a coaching recording to ICF simply because you're renewing your ACC.
However, mentor coaching is intended to focus on your actual coaching skills.
Reviewing recordings of your coaching can be an incredibly useful way to make that feedback specific.
Instead of saying:
“I think I struggle with asking powerful questions,”
we can listen to what actually happened.
Where did you stay curious?
Where might you have moved toward problem-solving?
Where did the client's awareness deepen?
Where did you interrupt something that might have been worth exploring?
What patterns show up repeatedly across your coaching?
That kind of feedback is one of the reasons I think mentor coaching can be much more valuable than simply completing a requirement.
One technical point that's also worth knowing: if your mentor coach listens to one of your recordings outside your session and prepares feedback in advance, their preparation time does not count toward your 10 required mentor coaching hours.
ICF counts the interactive time when you and your mentor coach are actually engaged in dialogue and feedback.
What if my ACC expires in January, february or March 2027?
If your renewal date falls very early in 2027 and you haven't started mentor coaching yet, I would pay attention to your timeline now.
Remember:
10 hours of mentor coaching must span at least 12 full weeks, and you’re going to need recordings to review for each session…
That means a coach whose credential expires in January can't simply begin mentor coaching in January and finish before submitting their renewal.
If your credential expires in the first few months of 2027, starting in fall 2026 gives you much more breathing room.
For example, a coach beginning mentor coaching in October could complete sessions across October, November, December and January rather than trying to pack everything into the final weeks before renewal.
And if you're working with an MCS-qualified mentor coach, crossing January 1 doesn't create the same eligibility problem.
What if my ACC doesn't expire until later in 2027?
You don't necessarily need to race to finish everything in 2026.
If your ACC expires later in 2027, you have more flexibility.
You can still complete qualifying mentor coaching in 2026 and use those hours toward your eventual renewal.
Or you can complete your mentor coaching in 2027 with an appropriately specialized MCS mentor coach.
I'd make the decision based on where you are in your coaching practice rather than simply the calendar.
If you've been meaning to work on your coaching skills, feel a little rusty, are thinking about eventually pursuing your PCC, or know mentor coaching is something you'll need to complete anyway, there may be no particular benefit to waiting.
What if I haven't coached much since earning my ACC?
This is more common than people realize.
You may have earned your ACC and then had your coaching practice slow down.
Maybe your career changed.
Maybe you took time away.
Maybe coaching became one small part of your work instead of the main thing.
And now your renewal date is approaching and you're thinking:
I'm supposed to do mentor coaching, but I barely feel like a coach right now.
You do not need to arrive at mentor coaching feeling polished.
In fact, this can be an excellent time to use the process for what it was actually designed to do: reconnect with your coaching skills, get feedback and become more intentional about how you coach.
The goal isn't to show your mentor coach that you're already perfect.
The goal is development.
So, should I complete my ACC mentor coaching in 2026?
If your ACC expires in 2027, completing your mentor coaching in 2026 can make a lot of sense.
You may especially want to start now if:
your renewal is in the first few months of 2027,
you haven't completed any of your 10 required hours yet,
you want plenty of time to meet the 12-week requirement,
you would rather not deal with mentor eligibility changes midway through an engagement,
you want to strengthen your coaching rather than rush through the requirement, or
you already know you're going to need the hours and would rather get organized early.
But the takeaway isn't that everyone has to finish before December 31.
It's simpler than that:
Qualifying mentor coaching completed in 2026 can still count toward an ACC renewal in 2027 or later.
And if you're receiving mentor coaching beginning January 1, 2027, make sure your mentor coach holds the appropriate ICF Mentor Coach Specialization.
