ICF ACC Renewal in 2026: The Exact Steps (Without the Overwhelm)

If your International Coaching Federation ACC renewal is coming up and you’re feeling even a little unsure about what’s required—you’re not alone.

Most coaches don’t struggle with doing the work.
They struggle with:

  • keeping track of their hours

  • understanding what actually counts

  • leaving it too late and feeling rushed

And suddenly something that should feel simple… feels overwhelming.

This post will walk you through exactly what you need to renew your ACC in 2026, step by step—so you can move forward with clarity (and avoid the last-minute scramble I see all the time as a mentor coach).

Before we dive in—if you want a simple way to stay organized as you go:

👉 I’ve created a free ACC Renewal Checklist + Tracker that walks you through exactly what to log (and how to avoid missing anything).

(It’s the same system I recommend to my mentor coaching clients to keep this process stress-free.)

What You Actually Need to Renew Your ACC

To renew your ACC, you need:

✔️ 40 Continuing Coach Education (CCE) credits

  • 24 must be Core Competencies

  • 3 must be Ethics

  • Remaining hours = Resource Development

✔️ 10 hours of Mentor Coaching

  • Completed over at least 3 months

  • Can be 1:1 or group

✔️ Submit your renewal application before expiration

Simple—but the confusion comes from how CCE credits are classified and tracked.

Understanding CCE Credits (This Is Where Most Confusion Happens)

Not all CCE credits are the same—and this is where many coaches make mistakes.

CCE is divided into three categories:

🔹 Core Competencies (Required: 24 hours)

These are focused on developing your actual coaching skills.

Examples:

  • ICF-accredited training programs

  • courses focused on coaching techniques

  • programs aligned with the ICF Core Competencies

👉 These are the most important hours—and often the ones coaches under-collect.

🔹 Ethics (Required: 3 hours)

Focused specifically on ethical coaching practice.

Examples:

  • ICF Code of Ethics training

  • ethics-focused workshops

👉 These must be clearly identified as ethics training to count.

🔹 Resource Development (Flexible)

This is where things open up more—but also where confusion increases.

Examples:

  • books, podcasts, self-study

  • business development training

  • non-accredited learning experiences

👉 Important: these hours cannot replace Core Competency hours

Where Most Coaches Get Stuck

From what I see (both privately and mentoring at Hornick School of Coaching):

1. They don’t track in real time

They rely on memory later—and it gets messy fast.

2. They misclassify CCE credits

Especially confusing:

  • Core Competencies vs Resource Development

  • what “counts” as accredited learning

3. They leave mentor coaching too late

And try to rush it—which reduces its effectiveness (and can create compliance issues).

4. They treat renewal like a checklist

Instead of using it as an opportunity to actually improve their coaching.

If you’re realizing you don’t have a system for tracking yet—this is where it becomes stressful later.

A Timeline That Actually Works

Here’s a realistic, low-stress approach:

🗓️ 12–18 months out

  • Start tracking CCE credits

  • Be intentional about Core Competency hours

🗓️ 6–12 months out

  • Begin mentor coaching

  • Continue logging consistently

🗓️ 3–6 months out

  • Complete mentor coaching

  • Review all categories

🗓️ Final 1–2 months

  • Submit with confidence

The System That Makes This Easy

A simple tracking system should include:

  • Activity name

  • CCE category (Core Competency / Ethics / Resource Development)

  • Hours earned

  • Date completed

  • Proof (certificate or link)

👉 This is the difference between a smooth renewal and a stressful one.

A Quick Note on Mentor Coaching

Mentor coaching is often treated like a requirement.

But it’s actually where the most meaningful growth happens.

In my work, this is where coaches:

  • deepen their ability to explore (not just ask one question and move on)

  • create stronger client awareness

  • align their coaching with PCC-level expectations

ACC renewal doesn’t have to feel complicated.

When you:

  • understand how CCE credits actually work

  • track consistently

  • follow a clear timeline

…it becomes straightforward.

And more importantly—it becomes a chance to grow into a more impactful coach.
