What exactly is changing in 2027?
The good news is that your ACC renewal requirements are more straightforward than they may initially appear.
You need 40 Continuing Coach Education credits, including 10 hours of mentor coaching completed over at least three months. Beginning January 1, 2027, you’ll also need to work with a mentor coach who holds the new ICF Mentor Coach Specialization.

What Are the ICF ACC Renewal Requirements for 2027?
To renew your ACC, you need to complete 40 CCE credits during your three-year renewal cycle.
Those 40 credits are divided into two categories:
24 Core Competency credits
These include:
10 hours of mentor coaching
3 credits in coaching ethics
11 additional Core Competency credits
16 additional credits
Your remaining 16 credits may be completed in:
Core Competencies
Resource Development
A combination of both
One of the most common points of confusion is whether the 10 mentor-coaching hours are additional to the 40 CCEs.
They are not.
Your 10 mentor-coaching hours are included within your 24 Core Competency credits, which are included within your 40 total CCEs.
You do not need to complete 40 CCEs plus another 10 hours of mentor coaching.
Do I Need Mentor Coaching to Renew My ACC?
Yes.
Every time you renew your ACC credential, you must complete 10 hours of mentor coaching.
These hours must be completed over a period of at least three months. This means you cannot complete all 10 hours in a few weeks immediately before your credential expires.
ICF’s standard structure allows:
At least 3 hours of individual mentor coaching
Up to 7 hours of group mentor coaching
A group size of no more than 10 participants per mentor coach
You may also choose to complete all 10 hours individually.
Many coaches prefer one-to-one mentor coaching because it allows the engagement to focus completely on their coaching, developmental goals and real client work.
When Should I Start My ACC Renewal Mentor Coaching?
Although ICF requires your mentor coaching to span at least three months, I recommend beginning well before your renewal deadline.
Four to six months gives you more space to:
Find the right mentor coach
Complete your sessions without rushing
Review real coaching recordings
Apply the feedback between sessions
Identify CCEs that support your specific developmental needs
Adjust your plan as your coaching grows
Mentor coaching is most valuable when you have enough time to experiment, reflect and return with new learning. It should not feel like 10 appointments you need to squeeze in before your credential expires.

What Is Changing for ACC Renewal in 2027?
The biggest change affects who may provide your mentor coaching.
Beginning January 1, 2027, ACC renewal candidates must complete any new mentor-coaching hours with a mentor coach who holds the ICF Mentor Coach Specialization, commonly referred to as the MCS.
This new qualification is intended to create a more consistent mentor-coaching experience and make it easier for coaches to identify people who have received specialized preparation in:
Coaching observation
Competency-based feedback
Coach development
Evaluating coaching at the appropriate credential level
Supporting growth over time
When you interview prospective mentor coaches, confirm that they hold the appropriate MCS designation and appear in the ICF Mentor Coach Registry.
Do I Need an MCS-ACC or MCS-PCC Mentor Coach?
For ACC renewal, your mentor coach may hold either:
MCS-ACC
MCS-PCC
Both specializations may be appropriate for your ACC renewal mentor-coaching hours.
If you expect to pursue your PCC credential in the future, working with an MCS-PCC mentor coach may help you begin examining your coaching through a PCC-level lens.
The right choice also depends on the mentor coach’s approach, experience and ability to support your particular development goals.
Before choosing someone, consider meeting with two to four prospective mentor coaches and asking:
Do you hold MCS-ACC or MCS-PCC?
How do you use real coaching recordings?
Will I receive written as well as verbal feedback?
How will we identify and track my developmental goals?
How do you assess coaching against ACC-level expectations?
Will our schedule meet the three-month requirement?
What support is available between sessions?
The credential matters—but fit matters too.
Do I Need to Submit a Recording to ICF for ACC Renewal?
No.
ACC renewal candidates do not submit a performance-evaluation recording or transcript to ICF as part of the renewal application.
Some of the confusion comes from the separate changes affecting new ACC and PCC applicants using the Portfolio path. Beginning in 2027, those candidates will move from the previous performance-evaluation process toward enhanced mentor coaching and structured skills validation.
That is different from ACC renewal.
The new Session Observation and Competency Review forms being introduced for Portfolio applicants are not additional submission requirements for ACC renewal candidates.
Why Might My Mentor Coach Still Ask for a Recording?
Although you don’t submit a recording to ICF for renewal, your mentor coach may use recordings developmentally.
A real coaching recording allows your mentor coach to offer feedback that is:
Specific
Evidence-based
Connected to the ICF Core Competencies
Grounded in what actually happened during a coaching conversation
Relevant to your strengths and developmental goals

We use the recording as a developmental tool—not as something the coach needs to submit to ICF for renewal.
Before recording any coaching session, always obtain informed client consent and use a secure recording and file-sharing process.
Do the 10 Mentor-Coaching Hours Count Toward My CCEs?
Yes.
Your 10 hours of mentor coaching count as 10 Core Competency CCE credits.
That means your 24 required Core Competency credits may include:
10 mentor-coaching credits
3 ethics credits
11 additional Core Competency credits
You can then complete the remaining 16 credits through Core Competency or Resource Development activities.
Understanding this early can save you from accidentally completing more education than you need—or selecting CCEs before you know which areas of your coaching would benefit most from further development.
Should I Complete My CCEs or Mentor Coaching First?
I recommend beginning mentor coaching before choosing all of your CCE activities.
Your mentor-coaching sessions can help you identify:
The competencies you already demonstrate consistently
Patterns that may be limiting your coaching
Skills you want to practise more intentionally
Gaps that could be supported through additional education
The types of CCE programs that would have the greatest impact
This turns your CCE plan into a developmental strategy instead of a collection of unrelated courses.
Your renewal then becomes an opportunity to improve how you coach—not simply an administrative requirement to complete.
How Do I Keep Track of My ACC Renewal Requirements?
Your renewal application may be selected for audit, so it’s important to keep clear records as you complete your requirements.
Track:
The date of each activity
The program or provider
Whether the credit is Core Competency or Resource Development
The number of credits earned
Certificates, transcripts or confirmation emails
Your mentor coach’s information
The start and end dates of your mentor-coaching engagement
Keeping these records from the beginning is much easier than searching through several years of emails shortly before your credential expires.
