Can Two ACC Coaches Mentor Each Other for ICF Renewal
Can Two ACC Coaches Mentor Each Other for ICF Renewal in 2027?
If you’re renewing your ICF ACC credential and know another ACC coach who also needs their 10 mentor coaching hours, you may have wondered:
Can we just mentor each other?
Under ICF’s current rules, the answer is yes — but there are important eligibility requirements, and those requirements change on January 1, 2027.
Before 2027, two ACC coaches can provide mentor coaching to one another for credential renewal if both ACC coaches have already renewed their ACC credential at least once.
ICF specifically confirms that one eligible ACC can provide 10 hours of mentor coaching to another eligible ACC, and that coach can in turn provide a separate 10 hours back.
But beginning January 1, 2027, simply being a renewed ACC is no longer enough.
New mentor coaching received for ACC renewal must be provided by someone who holds the appropriate ICF Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS).
So if you’re considering reciprocal mentor coaching, the year in which your sessions happen matters.
Can Two ACC Coaches Mentor Each Other in 2026?
Yes, provided both coaches meet ICF’s current eligibility requirements.
For mentor coaching provided before January 1, 2027, an ACC coach can serve as a mentor coach for someone renewing an ACC if they:
hold an active ACC credential
have already renewed that ACC at least once
and provide mentor coaching that actually meets ICF’s definition and requirements
ICF’s own FAQ specifically allows two eligible ACC coaches to mentor one another.
That means Coach A could provide Coach B with 10 qualifying mentor coaching hours, while Coach B separately provides Coach A with their own 10 hours.
There’s an important word there, though:
Separately.
You aren’t both receiving one mentor coaching hour at the same time.
If I mentor you for an hour, that is an hour toward your mentor coaching requirement.
If you mentor me later for an hour, that is an hour toward mine.
Each coach still needs their own complete 10-hour mentor coaching engagement.
What Changes on January 1, 2027?
This is the part that changes the answer considerably.
Beginning January 1, 2027, ICF requires new mentor coaching for ACC renewal to be provided by someone who holds an appropriate Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS).
For an ACC renewal candidate, you may receive:
ACC-level mentor coaching from an MCS-ACC
PCC-level mentor coaching from an MCS-PCC
Simply holding an ACC, PCC or MCC credential will no longer be enough to provide new mentor coaching for ACC renewal.
You can read more here : 2027 CHANGES TO CREDENTIAL RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS
& here : DO I NEED AN MCS MENTOR COACH FOR ACC RENEWAL IN 2027?
That means the old rule of:
“We’re both renewed ACCs, so we can mentor each other.”
will no longer be sufficient on its own.
Can Two MCS-ACC Coaches Mentor Each Other in 2027?
This is where I would be careful.
ICF’s existing guidance says two eligible ACC coaches can mentor each other.
Its newer 2027 guidance says mentor coaching provided beginning January 1, 2027 must come from an appropriately qualified MCS mentor coach.
Taken together, that suggests a reciprocal arrangement may still be possible if both coaches independently meet the new MCS eligibility requirement at the appropriate level.
In other words, if both coaches hold an eligible MCS-ACC, each would independently meet the qualification to provide ACC-level mentor coaching.
However, as of October 2026, ICF’s older reciprocal mentoring FAQ has not yet been rewritten specifically around the new MCS framework.
So if you plan to rely on a reciprocal MCS-to-MCS arrangement after January 1, 2027, I recommend confirming your specific situation directly with ICF before beginning.
I would rather see a coach check first than discover at renewal that their hours were interpreted differently.
Does Informal Peer Coaching Count?
Not automatically.
This is probably the biggest misconception around reciprocal mentor coaching.
There is a difference between:
“My coach friend and I give each other feedback sometimes.”
and
qualifying ICF mentor coaching.
Mentor coaching has a specific purpose.
The work needs to focus on developing your coaching skills in relation to the ICF Core Competencies, including feedback based on your actual coaching.
So meeting another coach once a month to:
talk about difficult clients
brainstorm business problems
discuss your niches
share coaching resources
vent about running a practice
or coach each other on personal goals
does not automatically become ICF mentor coaching.
Those conversations may be valuable.
They’re simply not necessarily the same thing as fulfilling your credential requirement.
What Does Reciprocal Mentor Coaching Need to Include?
Whether you’re paying a mentor coach or using an eligible reciprocal arrangement, the ACC renewal requirement is still the same.
You need:
10 hours of mentor coaching
completed over at least:
three months
with at least:
three hours completed one-to-one.
The focus needs to be your development as a coach in relation to the ICF Core Competencies.
Reciprocal mentoring does not create an exception to those rules.
You can’t, for example, meet your coach friend for a full Saturday, exchange five hours of feedback each, meet again the next weekend and call the requirement complete.
The developmental time span still matters.
Do We Need to Review Each Other’s Coaching Recordings?
Observed coaching is an important part of genuine mentor coaching.
You do not need to submit a coaching recording to ICF simply because you are renewing your ACC.
But your mentor needs something real to observe if the goal is to provide meaningful competency-based feedback about how you coach.
That often means working with actual coaching recordings.
Read more here: DO I NEED COACHING RECORDINGS FOR ACC RENEWAL IN 2027?
For example, instead of saying:
“I think I interrupt too often.”
your mentor can listen to the coaching and help you examine:
when you interrupted
what was happening immediately beforehand
what effect it had on the client
whether there was something the client offered that you could have followed
and what you might experiment with instead
That is very different from two peers simply swapping opinions about coaching.
Does Recording Review Time Count Toward the 10 Hours?
Only the interactive mentor coaching time counts.
If your peer mentor spends 45 minutes listening to your recording before you meet and then you spend one hour discussing it together, you receive one hour of mentor coaching.
You do not receive one hour and 45 minutes.
The time your mentor spends independently reviewing the recording and preparing feedback is part of their work, but it does not add to your 10 required mentor coaching hours.

Is Reciprocal Mentor Coaching Free?
Potentially, yes.
One obvious reason coaches consider reciprocal mentor coaching is cost.
Instead of each coach hiring a mentor, two eligible coaches may exchange mentor coaching services.
Under the pre-2027 rules, ICF explicitly permits qualifying reciprocal ACC mentor coaching, which means payment itself is not what determines whether the hours qualify.
That can make reciprocal mentor coaching an appealing option if your main priority is completing the requirement as affordably as possible.
But cost isn’t the only thing I would consider.
Is Reciprocal Mentor Coaching the Best Option?
Maybe.
For some coaches, it could work extremely well.
You might already have a trusted colleague who:
meets the ICF eligibility requirements
understands the Core Competencies deeply
is skilled at reviewing coaching
can give specific feedback without becoming overly directive
will genuinely prepare before your sessions
and can separate being your friend or colleague from being your mentor coach
That could be a valuable arrangement.
But I’d also ask yourself an uncomfortable question:
Will we actually challenge each other enough?
Peer relationships sometimes make honest developmental feedback harder.
You may know one another well.
You may share similar coaching habits.
You may not want to be overly critical.
Or neither of you may have much experience assessing coaching against credential-level standards.
The fact that someone is a good coach does not automatically mean they are skilled at observing another coach and delivering developmental feedback.
That distinction is part of why ICF is introducing the MCS in 2027.
Why Is ICF Changing the Mentor Coach Requirements?
ICF says the Mentor Coach Specialization is intended to establish greater consistency and quality in mentor coaching.
To earn an MCS, coaches need additional education specifically related to mentor coaching and evaluation.
The Standard MCS pathway currently requires:
an active PCC or MCC, or a renewed ACC
at least 41 hours of mentor coaching education
at least 50% of that education completed synchronously
applicable ICF evaluation training for the level being mentored, such as ACC BARS or PCC Markers training
There is also a Credit for Prior Learning pathway for experienced mentor coaches who meet separate training and experience criteria.

So starting in 2027, the question is not simply:
“Is this person credentialed?”
It becomes:
“Has this person specifically developed and demonstrated expertise in mentor coaching?”
How Can I Check Whether Someone Is Eligible to Mentor Me in 2027?
Use the ICF Mentor Coach Registry.
The registry allows you to search for eligible mentor coaches and review their qualifications.

This is worth checking before you begin an engagement.
Do not assume that someone with “PCC” after their name automatically qualifies to provide your 2027 mentor coaching.
The MCS becomes the important designation.
What If We Start Mentoring Each Other in 2026 but Finish in 2027?
Pay close attention here.
ICF says mentor coaching completed in 2026 or earlier under the current eligibility requirements remains valid.
But any new mentor coaching received on or after January 1, 2027 must be provided by an appropriately qualified MCS mentor coach.

So imagine two renewed ACC coaches begin reciprocal mentor coaching in October 2026.
Neither holds the MCS.
Their qualifying 2026 sessions may be acceptable under the existing rules.
But they should not assume sessions taking place in January or February 2027 will qualify, because the eligibility requirement has changed.
If your mentor coaching engagement will cross into 2027, choosing an MCS-qualified mentor from the beginning is much simpler.

What If I Don’t Want to Pay for 10 Private Mentor Coaching Hours?
You have another option besides reciprocal mentoring.
ICF only requires three of your 10 hours to be completed individually.
The other seven hours may be completed through qualifying group mentor coaching.
That means one of the more affordable ways to satisfy the requirement can be:
7 hours of group mentor coaching + 3 private hours
This can give you the lower cost and shared learning of a group while still preserving some individual developmental work.

That may make more sense for some coaches than trying to create a reciprocal arrangement themselves.
Why Do I Offer All 10 Hours Privately?
My own ACC Renewal Mentor Coaching package is entirely one-to-one.
That isn’t because ICF requires 10 private hours.
It doesn’t.
I offer it this way because I see a lot of value in following one coach’s development closely over time.
You send me real coaching recordings.
I review them before selected sessions.
I organize competency-based feedback.
We notice patterns across your coaching rather than treating every session as an isolated conversation.
And we keep returning to the development goals that matter specifically to you.
For some coaches, that amount of personalization is worth paying for.
For others, reciprocal mentoring or a group/private combination may make more sense.
I think you should know all of those options before deciding.

So, Can Two ACC Coaches Mentor Each Other for Renewal?
Here’s the simplest answer.
Before January 1, 2027
Yes.
ICF currently permits two ACC coaches to mentor one another for renewal as long as both meet the ACC mentor coach eligibility requirement, including having renewed their ACC at least once.
Each coach still needs their own 10 hours of qualifying mentor coaching over the required time period.
Beginning January 1, 2027
Being a renewed ACC is no longer enough.
New mentor coaching must be provided by someone holding the appropriate ICF Mentor Coach Specialization.
If both coaches independently hold an appropriate MCS, reciprocal mentoring may still be possible under the combined rules, but because ICF’s older reciprocal FAQ has not yet been specifically rewritten for the MCS era, I recommend confirming a post-January 1 reciprocal arrangement directly with ICF before relying on it for renewal.
The safer question for 2027 is no longer:
“Are we both ACC coaches?”
It is:
“Are we each actually qualified under ICF’s new MCS requirements to provide the mentor coaching the other person needs?”
