Can I Do My ACC Renewal Mentor Coaching in a Group? The 3 vs. 7 Hour Rule Explained

Can I Do My ACC Renewal Mentor Coaching in a Group? The 3 vs. 7 Hour Rule Explained

If you’re renewing your ICF ACC credential and need to complete your 10 hours of mentor coaching, you may be wondering:

Do all 10 hours need to be one-to-one, or can I complete my ACC renewal mentor coaching in a group?

The good news is that you have options.

For ICF ACC renewal, you need 10 hours of mentor coaching completed over a minimum of three months.

Of those 10 hours:

At least 3 hours must be completed one-to-one with a qualified mentor coach.

The remaining 7 hours can be completed either individually or through group mentor coaching.

That means you can choose:

7 group hours + 3 individual hours

or

6 group hours + 4 individual hours

or

3 group hours + 7 individual hours

or even:

10 individual hours

What you cannot do is complete all 10 hours through group mentor coaching.

ICF requires at least three hours of individual mentor coaching.

What Is the ICF 3 vs. 7 Hour Mentor Coaching Rule?

To renew your ACC credential, ICF requires:

  • 10 total hours of mentor coaching

  • completed over at least three months

  • at least 3 hours one-to-one

  • no more than 7 hours completed in a group

If you choose group mentor coaching, the group may have no more than 10 participants per mentor coach.

The three private hours are a minimum, not a maximum.

This is a distinction I see coaches get confused about.

You don’t have to do exactly seven hours in a group.

You could choose to complete all 10 privately.

That’s how I structure my own full ACC Renewal Mentor Coaching package.

Can I Complete All 10 ACC Mentor Coaching Hours in a Group?

No.

ICF allows a maximum of seven hours of group mentor coaching toward the 10-hour requirement.

You must complete at least three hours individually with a mentor coach.

So if you find a group program advertising “10 hours of group mentor coaching for ACC renewal,” I would ask exactly how the program is structured before enrolling.

A qualifying 10-hour program could absolutely include group work, but at least three of the hours you claim toward your ICF requirement need to be individual.

Can I Complete All 10 Hours One-to-One?

Yes.

And this is the route some coaches prefer.

ICF says the remaining seven hours can be group mentor coaching.

It doesn’t say they have to be.

All 10 hours can be completed privately.

That means you can choose between a more affordable group/private combination and a fully individualized mentor coaching engagement depending on what you actually want from the experience.

Why Would I Choose Group Mentor Coaching?

There can be a lot of value in group mentor coaching.

One obvious advantage is cost.

Seven group hours plus three individual hours will often cost less than purchasing 10 private hours with a mentor coach.

Read more on pricing here: HOW MUCH DOES ICF ACC RENEWAL MENTOR COACHING COST IN 2027?

But cost isn’t the only benefit.

In a good group mentor coaching environment, you get to learn from other coaches.

You may hear someone ask a question you hadn’t thought to ask.

You may observe another coach receive feedback and suddenly recognize the same pattern in your own work.

You get exposure to different coaching styles, different clients and different ways of working with the ICF Core Competencies.

For some coaches, that shared-learning environment is incredibly valuable.

And if your biggest priority is completing your ACC renewal requirements as economically as possible, seven group hours plus three private hours can be a very sensible route.

Why Would I Choose Private Mentor Coaching Instead?

Private mentor coaching gives us the opportunity to make the process much more specific to you.

That’s the reason I currently offer my full 10-hour mentor coaching engagement one-to-one.

We aren’t trying to create a learning experience that needs to serve eight or ten different coaches.

We can focus entirely on your coaching.

When you send me a coaching recording before a session, I can review it closely and look at:

  • what you are already doing well

  • recurring patterns across your coaching

  • how you're applying the ICF Core Competencies

  • where you may be subtly leading or directing

  • moments where the client offers something that could be explored further

  • how awareness is being created

  • what happens after that awareness appears

  • and what developmental edge might create the biggest shift in your coaching

Then we can use our actual mentor coaching session to work with what I observed.

Over time, we can notice patterns across multiple recordings rather than looking at your coaching through one isolated snapshot.

That level of personalization is the primary reason someone might choose 10 private hours instead of the minimum three.

Is Private Mentor Coaching Better Than Group Mentor Coaching?

Not necessarily.

They offer different things.

If I were choosing, I’d ask myself:

What am I hoping to get from these 10 hours?

If your answer is:

“I mostly need to complete my ICF requirement and I’d like to do it affordably.”

A group program plus three private hours may be an excellent fit.

If your answer is:

“I want someone to look closely at my coaching and help me understand exactly where I can grow.”

You may get more value from additional individual hours.

If your answer is somewhere in between, you can create a combination that works for you.

There isn’t one morally superior way to complete mentor coaching.

The important thing is that the format meets the ICF requirements and gives you the kind of development you’re actually looking for.

What Happens During Group Mentor Coaching?

A qualifying mentor coaching group should still be focused on developing coaching skill in relation to the ICF Core Competencies.

Mentor coaching is not simply a group of coaches talking about their businesses or coaching one another on personal goals.

ICF defines mentor coaching as a developmental process focused on a coach’s coaching skills, with a repeating cycle of feedback, reflection and practice. ICF

Depending on the mentor and program, group sessions may include:

  • observing coaching

  • listening to coaching recordings

  • practising specific competencies

  • giving and receiving feedback

  • exploring real coaching situations

  • examining patterns in coaching

  • and discussing how the ICF Core Competencies show up in practice

Before enrolling in a group, I would ask the provider how the group actually works.

The fact that something is called “mentor coaching” doesn’t tell you much about the experience you’re going to receive.

Learn more here: WHAT COUNTS AS MENTOR COACHING FOR ICF ACC RENEWAL?

How Many People Can Be in an ICF Mentor Coaching Group?

ICF limits qualifying group mentor coaching to no more than 10 participants per mentor coach.

That’s worth checking before you enroll.

If you’re considering a program with a much larger audience, ask the provider whether the sessions you’re purchasing actually qualify as mentor coaching toward your 10-hour requirement.

A webinar or large training program isn’t automatically mentor coaching simply because it teaches the ICF Core Competencies.

Do My Group and Private Mentor Coaching Still Have to Span Three Months?

Yes.

Using a combination of group and private mentor coaching does not remove the time requirement.

Your 10 hours still need to be completed over a minimum period of three months.

So you can’t complete seven group hours over one weekend, book three private hours the following week and submit your renewal.

The developmental period matters.

I generally recommend planning your mentor coaching well before your ACC expiration date rather than trying to squeeze the requirement into the final few months.

Here’s some info on how to map out when to start: WHEN SHOULD I START MY 10 MENTOR COACHING HOURS FOR ACC RENEWAL?

Do the 10 Mentor Coaching Hours Count Toward My 40 CCE Credits?

Yes.

This is another important ACC renewal detail.

You need 40 total CCE credits for ACC renewal.

At least 24 need to be in Core Competencies.

Your required 10 hours of mentor coaching count as 10 of those Core Competency credits.

You do not need 40 CCE credits plus another 10 mentor coaching hours. ICF

So after accounting for your mentor coaching and your required ethics education, you can map out the remaining CCEs you need.

Can I Complete Seven Group Hours With One Mentor and Three Private Hours With Someone Else?

This is one reason the 7 + 3 model can be useful.

For example, you may complete qualifying group mentor coaching through an ICF chapter or mentor coaching program and then complete your required private hours separately.

The key is making sure the hours you claim meet the ICF requirements and that the mentor coaches are eligible to provide the level of mentor coaching you need.

When you submit your renewal information, ICF asks for details about your mentor coaching, including the mentor coach's name and email, credential level, start and end dates and total mentor coaching hours. ICF

If you’ve already completed seven qualifying group hours and are looking for the required private portion, I offer a 3-Hour Private Mentor Coaching Package for exactly this situation.

What Changes for Group Mentor Coaching in 2027?

This is especially important if your mentor coaching will take place in 2027.

Beginning January 1, 2027, new mentor coaching for ACC renewal must be provided by someone who holds an appropriate ICF Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS).

An ACC renewal coach may receive ACC-level mentor coaching from an MCS-ACC or PCC-level mentor coaching from an MCS-PCC.

This applies whether the mentor coaching is individual or group-based.

So if you’re enrolling in a group mentor coaching program that meets in 2027, don’t just ask:

“Is this person an ICF credentialed coach?”

Ask:

“Does the mentor coach hold the appropriate MCS for the mentoring I’ll receive?”

You can also verify a mentor coach through the ICF Mentor Coach Registry.

What If My Group Mentor Coaching Starts in 2026 and Ends in 2027?

This is another situation where dates matter.

ICF says mentor coaching properly completed before January 1, 2027 under the existing eligibility requirements can still be used.

But new mentor coaching hours received beginning January 1, 2027 must be provided by an appropriately qualified MCS mentor coach.

So if you’re joining a group in late 2026 that will continue into 2027, check the mentor coach’s MCS status before assuming the entire program will qualify.

What If I Already Completed Seven Group Mentor Coaching Hours?

Then you may only need your three required individual hours.

Before booking them, I’d confirm:

  • your seven group hours qualify as ICF mentor coaching

  • your full mentor coaching timeline will span at least three months

  • the mentor providing your remaining hours meets the applicable eligibility requirements

  • and you have the information you’ll need when you submit your renewal

If all of that is in place, you don’t need to purchase another seven private hours just because you’re switching mentor coaches.

This is exactly why I offer a separate 3-Hour Private Mentor Coaching Package.

How Do I Choose Between 7 Group + 3 Private or 10 Private Hours?

I would make the decision based on three things:

your budget, your learning style and what you want to get out of mentor coaching.

Seven group hours plus three individual hours may be the better choice if keeping the cost lower is important to you and you enjoy learning alongside other coaches.

Ten private hours may make more sense if you want an individualized development plan, repeated recording review and the opportunity to follow your specific coaching patterns over several months.

There is also nothing wrong with choosing the more affordable option.

I talk openly about mentor coaching costs because I think coaches should understand their options before they spend money. You can find my pricing here.

Your ACC renewal is already an investment of time and money.

The goal is to choose a mentor coaching structure that meets the requirement and makes sense for you.

Do I Need Group Mentor Coaching for ACC Renewal?

No.

Group mentor coaching is an option, not a requirement.

You need 10 hours total, with at least three completed individually.

You can complete:

7 group + 3 private

or any other qualifying combination with no more than seven group hours.

You can also complete:

10 private hours.

The right structure depends on what you value most.

My Approach to ACC Renewal Mentor Coaching

I currently offer my full 10-hour ACC Renewal Mentor Coaching package entirely one-to-one.

I’m an ICF PCC and hold the ICF Mentor Coach Specialization at both the ACC and PCC levels, along with PCC Marker Assessor training.

My approach is highly personalized.

We begin by looking at where you are now and what you want to develop.

Throughout the engagement, you send me real coaching recordings. I review selected recordings before our sessions, organize competency-based feedback and use our time together to help you see what’s already working and where you might experiment next.

Because we’re working privately, we can follow your development across the entire engagement.

The goal is certainly to complete your 10 required hours.

But I want you to leave those 10 hours knowing more about yourself as a coach than you did when we started.

And if you've already completed seven qualifying group hours, you don't need my full package.

I also offer a 3-Hour Private Mentor Coaching Package so you can complete the individual portion of your requirement without paying for hours you don't need.

Ready to Complete Your ACC Renewal Mentor Coaching?

If you're still figuring out which route makes sense, start by looking at what you've already completed.

Do you have any qualifying mentor coaching hours?

When does your ACC expire?

Are your existing hours group or individual?

Were they completed within your current renewal cycle?

Will any of your remaining mentor coaching happen in 2027?

Once you know those answers, it's usually much easier to see what you actually need.

If private mentor coaching feels like the right next step, you can review my packages and apply to work together below.
