Can I Complete Just 1–3 Hours of Mentor Coaching for ACC Renewal?

Can I Complete Just 1–3 Hours of Mentor Coaching for ACC Renewal?

If you’re searching for 1 hour of mentor coaching for ACC renewal, there’s a good chance you’ve already completed part of your ICF mentor coaching requirement and are trying to figure out what you still need.

Maybe you completed mentor coaching through your original coach training program.

Maybe you’ve already done seven group mentor coaching hours.

Maybe you started with another mentor coach but didn’t complete all 10 hours.

Or perhaps you’ve checked your records and realized you’re simply short by an hour or two.

So, do you need to start all over again with a new 10-hour mentor coaching package?

Not necessarily.

ICF allows you to work with more than one mentor coach. The important thing is that, when your qualifying mentor coaching is combined, you still meet the full ACC renewal requirements. ICF’s own application materials include the option to “Add Mentor Coach” when more than one mentor has contributed to the required hours.

That means if you already have qualifying mentor coaching hours, you may only need to complete the hours you’re missing.

But there are a few important rules to check first.

Can I Do Just 1 Hour of Mentor Coaching for ACC Renewal?

Potentially, yes.

But one hour by itself does not satisfy the ACC renewal mentor coaching requirement.

ICF requires ACC coaches to complete 10 hours of mentor coaching each time they renew their ACC credential.

Those 10 hours must:

  • span at least three months

  • include at least three hours of individual, one-to-one mentor coaching

  • include no more than seven group mentor coaching hours

  • meet ICF’s definition of qualifying mentor coaching

  • and be provided by an eligible mentor coach

So if you already have nine qualifying mentor coaching hours, and your existing hours satisfy the other requirements, you may only need one more hour to reach 10.

If you only have one hour total, however, you still need another nine.

The key question isn’t:

“Can one mentor coaching hour count?”

It’s:

“What qualifying mentor coaching have I already completed, and what is still missing?”

Do All 10 Hours Have to Be With the Same Mentor Coach?

No.

This is useful to know if you started your mentor coaching somewhere else.

ICF’s credential application materials specifically allow candidates to enter information for more than one mentor coach.

So you do not necessarily need to complete all 10 hours with one person.

For example, you might have:

7 group hours with Mentor Coach A

plus

3 private hours with Mentor Coach B

Or perhaps:

8 qualifying hours with Mentor Coach A

plus

2 qualifying hours with Mentor Coach B

The combination can work as long as the overall 10 hours meet all of ICF’s requirements.

What If I Already Have 7 Group Mentor Coaching Hours?

This is probably the clearest example.

ICF allows up to seven of your 10 mentor coaching hours to be completed in a group.

At least three hours must be individual.

So if you’ve already completed seven qualifying group mentor coaching hours, you may only need:

3 hours of private mentor coaching.

You do not need to purchase another full 10-hour package.

This is exactly why I offer a 3-Hour Private Mentor Coaching Package.

It’s designed for coaches who have already completed the group portion of their requirement and now need the three individual hours required for ACC renewal.

What If I Have 8 or 9 Hours Already?

Then you may genuinely only be missing one or two hours.

Before booking anything, though, I would check your existing hours carefully.

Ask:

  • How many mentor coaching hours have I actually completed?

  • How many were individual?

  • How many were group?

  • When was my first qualifying mentor coaching session?

  • When was my most recent session?

  • Did the hours span at least three months?

  • Was the person providing the mentor coaching eligible under the rules at the time?

  • Were these hours already used for a previous ACC credential or renewal?

That last point is particularly important.

ACC coaches need a new 10 hours of mentor coaching during each renewal cycle. You cannot simply reuse the same 10 hours you used for your original credential or previous ACC renewal.

What Does “Over at Least Three Months” Mean?

This is where coaches who are trying to finish one missing hour can sometimes run into trouble.

ICF doesn’t simply require 10 accumulated hours.

The mentor coaching must also take place over a minimum of three months.

So imagine you completed nine mentor coaching hours during a two-day training intensive.

You can’t necessarily book one additional hour the following week and assume you’ve satisfied the requirement.

Your overall mentor coaching timeline also needs to meet ICF’s minimum duration.

On the other hand, imagine you completed your first mentor coaching session in January, continued through March and have nine qualifying hours recorded.

In that situation, completing one final qualifying hour may bring you to the required 10 while also satisfying the timeline.

Dates matter just as much as the number of hours.

Do I Need Three Hours With the Same Private Mentor Coach?

ICF’s requirement is that at least three of your total 10 mentor coaching hours are one-to-one.

Its application materials also allow more than one mentor coach to be reported.

So the bigger issue is whether your combined mentor coaching record satisfies the individual-hour requirement, not whether all of your qualifying hours came from the same person.

That said, there can be a developmental advantage to completing your private hours with the same mentor.

Three separate mentors can each give you useful feedback.

But one mentor working with you across multiple sessions can begin to notice patterns.

That’s often where mentor coaching becomes much more valuable.

Instead of:

“Here is something I noticed in this recording.”

we can begin saying:

“This is the third recording where this pattern has appeared. What do you notice?”

That longer developmental arc is one of the reasons I value ongoing private mentor coaching.

Can I Switch Mentor Coaches Partway Through?

Yes, you are not locked into one mentor coach simply because you started your hours with them.

There are plenty of legitimate reasons someone might change mentors.

Your original mentor may no longer offer mentor coaching.

Your schedules might stop aligning.

You may have completed a group program and now need an individual mentor.

Or perhaps you simply realized that the relationship wasn’t the right fit.

Changing mentor coaches does not automatically invalidate the qualifying hours you’ve already completed.

But before switching, I’d make sure you have a clear record of:

  • the mentor coach’s name

  • their credential information

  • your session dates

  • the number of hours completed

  • whether those hours were group or individual

  • and the period over which the mentoring occurred

That will make it much easier to see exactly what is still outstanding.

What If My Previous “Mentor Coaching” Was Actually Regular Coaching?

This is worth checking before assuming you only need another hour or two.

Mentor coaching has a specific purpose.

It focuses on developing your coaching skills in relation to the ICF Core Competencies.

Regular life coaching, business coaching, consulting, supervision or general professional-development conversations do not automatically count as mentor coaching.

Read more here: WHAT COUNTS AS MENTOR COACHING FOR ICF ACC RENEWAL?

For example, if you spent six sessions with another coach working on:

  • getting more coaching clients

  • clarifying your niche

  • building your confidence

  • setting business goals

  • managing your time

those may have been excellent coaching sessions.

But they are not automatically six hours of ICF mentor coaching.

Before calculating what you have left, make sure the hours you’re counting actually qualify.

What If My Mentor Coaching Was Included in My Original Coach Training?

Be careful here too.

Mentor coaching that helped you earn your original ACC credential cannot simply be reused indefinitely for ACC renewal.

ICF requires ACC coaches to complete an additional 10 hours of mentor coaching each renewal cycle.

So if the 10 hours included in your Level 1 coach training were the same hours you used to earn your ACC, you will need new mentor coaching for your first ACC renewal.

Your renewal requirement is intended to support continued development after you become credentialed.

What Changes If My Remaining Mentor Coaching Happens in 2027?

This is especially important if you only have one, two or three hours left.

Beginning January 1, 2027, any new mentor coaching received for ACC renewal must be provided by someone holding the appropriate ICF Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS).For an ACC renewal, that means you may receive:

ACC-level mentor coaching from an MCS-ACC

or

PCC-level mentor coaching from an MCS-PCC.

So imagine you completed nine valid hours in 2026 with a mentor who qualified under the 2026 rules.

Those nine hours can still count.

But if your tenth hour happens in January 2027, the person providing that new 2027 hour needs to meet the new MCS requirement. ICF explicitly says qualifying mentor coaching completed in 2026 or earlier can still be used toward a later renewal, while new hours beginning January 1, 2027 fall under the MCS rules.

Do I Need the New ICF Session Observation Forms for My Remaining Hours?

Not for ordinary ACC renewal.

This is an important distinction because there is a lot of information circulating about ICF’s new 2027 mentor coaching process.

ICF has introduced Session Observation and Competency Review forms for certain credential applications.

But ICF specifically says these forms are not required when you are simply renewing your ACC credential.

Your mentor may still use developmental tools and recording review as part of the process.

You simply do not need to submit those new forms to ICF as part of a standard ACC renewal.

Do I Need a Coaching Recording If I Only Need 1–3 Hours?

You do not submit a recording to ICF as part of an ordinary ACC renewal.

But recordings can still be incredibly useful during mentor coaching.

If we only have three private hours together, I want those hours to be as useful as possible.

Listening to your real coaching gives us something concrete to work from.

Rather than discussing how you think you coach, we can look at what actually happened.

We can explore:

  • where you partnered effectively

  • where the client generated meaningful awareness

  • what you may have missed

  • where you stepped in too quickly

  • how your questions affected the conversation

  • and what you might experiment with next

Even a short mentor coaching engagement can be developmental when the feedback is specific to your actual coaching.

How Do I Know Exactly How Many Mentor Coaching Hours I Still Need?

Before buying anything, make yourself a simple mentor coaching record.

Write down each qualifying mentor coaching experience and include:

Mentor Coach
Date
Number of Hours
Group or Individual
Credential / MCS Status
Which ACC Renewal Cycle the Hours Belong To

Then total them.

You’re looking for:

10 qualifying hours total

with

at least 3 individual hours

over

at least 3 months.

If you have nine qualifying hours, you may only need one more.

If you have seven group hours but no individual hours, you need three private hours.

If you have 10 hours but they were completed in six weeks, you may still have a timing problem.

If the hours were used for your previous credential or renewal, you need a new set for this cycle.

That little audit can save you from purchasing mentor coaching you don’t actually need.

Should I Buy a Full 10-Hour Package If I Only Need Three Hours?

No.

I don’t think you should pay for seven hours you don’t need just because a mentor coach happens to sell a 10-hour package.

If you already have seven qualifying group hours and only need the required individual portion, look for a mentor who offers a 3-hour option.

That’s why I offer one. You can see pricing & more info here.

If you don’t have any mentor coaching completed yet and want a highly individualized experience, I also offer the full 10-hour private ACC Renewal Mentor Coaching package.

And if cost is an important consideration, I’ve written separately about the different ways you can structure your hours.

So, Can I Complete Just 1–3 Hours of Mentor Coaching for ACC Renewal?

Yes — if those are genuinely the only qualifying hours you still need.

You do not necessarily have to complete all 10 hours with the same mentor coach.

But before booking one, two or three additional hours, make sure your complete mentor coaching record satisfies ICF’s requirements:

  • 10 total mentor coaching hours

  • at least three individual hours

  • no more than seven group hours

  • at least three months from the beginning to the end of the mentor coaching

  • qualifying mentor coaching rather than regular coaching

  • eligible mentor coaches

  • new hours for your current ACC renewal cycle

  • and, beginning January 1, 2027, an appropriately qualified MCS for any new mentor coaching you receive

If all you’re missing is one hour, you may only need one hour.

If you’ve already completed seven qualifying group hours, you may only need three private hours.

You do not need to start over simply because you change mentor coaches.
